Instant Pot Sev Usal - Dried Peas Curry

Sev Usal is dried peas curry that is tangy and spicy. My hometown (Vadodara, Gujarat) in India is famous for this dish. This curry is served with Sev (crispy Gram flour vermicelli) and Pav (buns). This curry does not have any cream and it is Vegan. Moreover, this curry is full of protein and you can make it in Instant Pot in about 30 min making it ideal for busy days.


Recipe for Sev Usal

Hands on Time: 5 min | Total Time: 30 min | Serving: 2-3


Ingredients

  • 1 cup dry peas, soaked overnight or at least for 8 hours

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped

  • 3 cloves of garlic, finely chopped

  • 1 tsp ginger paste

  • 1 tbsp oil

  • 1/2 tsp carom seeds

  • 1/2 tsp red chili

  • 2 tbsp Sev Usal Masala - I use Shreeji brand that you can find in any Indian grocery store

  • salt per taste

  • Juice of 1/2 regular size lemon or per taste

  • 3 cups water

  • Sev - Bomaby Kitchen brand or any other


Direction

  • Start Instant Pot on Saute mode and add oil and carom seeds

  • Add garlic, ginger, and onion. Stir and Cook for about ~3 min

  • Add Tomatoes and cook again for about ~3 min

  • Add all spices and mix

  • Add soaked dry peas and water

  • Pressure Cook 15 min high

  • Pressure release manual or naturally

  • Add lemon juice and serve hot with Sev
