Fada ni Khichdi

In Ayurveda, Khichdi is known as detox food. There are different ways khichdi is made and this is one of them. Somepeople associate Khichdi with sick people food but my moto is that sometimes you have to eat sick people food not to get sick! Fada ni Khichdi aka daliya Khichdi is made with broken wheat (cracked wheat). cracked wheat is whole grain and extremely healthy filled with important vitamins and minerals. It is made in Instant Pot and under 30 min. You can add any vegetables you want. I have added dudhi (indian bottle gourd) zucchini or sometimes nothing.



Recipe for Fada ni Khichdi

Serves: 2 | Prep time: 3 min | Cook time: 15 min


Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cracked wheat (big)

  • 1/4 cup moong daal - soaked for 15-30 min and washed

  • 1/3 cup mixed vegetables and/or any other vegetables of choice

  • 1/4 cup onion, chopped

  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped

  • 1/2 tsp ginger paste

  • 1 green chili, chopped finely

  • 1 tbsp ghee

  • 3-4 curry leaves

  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1 tsp dhanan jiru

  • pinch of hing - asafetida

  • 1/4 tsp tumeric

  • 1/2 indian bottle gourd (optional)

  • 2.5 cups water

  • Salt per taste

  • Achari Methi powder for the side


Direction:

  • Start IP on sauté and add ghee

  • once ghee is heated, add cumin seeds, curry leaves and asafetida

  • Once it becomes aromatic, add ginger/garlic and green chili

  • Add onion, mix and cook for about 1 min

  • Add rest of the vegetables and cracked wheat

  • stir continuously making sure wheat doesn't stick to the bottom. roast wheat this way for about 3-4 min.

  • Add washed moong daal and rest of the spices

  • Add water and once it starts to boil, close the Instant Pot lid

  • Cook on high for 10 min

  • Enjoy with Methi masala, pickle and/or papad
